It is necessary to look at the past, learn from it, and move into the future with a healthier belief system

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event involving actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Trauma may result from a single incident, such as an accident, natural disaster, assault, or combat exposure. PTSD is characterized by a set of symptoms that persist for more than one month and cause significant distress or impairment in daily functioning.

Symptoms of PTSD may include:

  • Intrusive memories: Recurrent, involuntary, and distressing memories of the traumatic event, flashbacks, or nightmares.
  • Avoidance: Efforts to avoid thoughts, feelings, places, people, or activities that are reminders of the trauma.
  • Negative changes in mood and thinking: Persistent negative beliefs about oneself or the world, distorted blame, feelings of detachment or numbness, loss of interest in activities, and difficulty experiencing positive emotions.
  • Hyperarousal: Heightened alertness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, exaggerated startle response, and difficulty concentrating.

PTSD affects people of all ages and backgrounds. Not everyone who experiences trauma will develop PTSD, but for those who do, the symptoms can be severe and long-lasting without appropriate support and intervention.

Transform Your Life with Professional Support

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD)

Complex PTSD is a related condition that arises from prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic events, particularly those that occur in childhood or within interpersonal relationships. Examples include ongoing abuse, neglect, domestic violence, captivity, or living in a war zone. The repeated nature of these traumas, often occurring in situations where escape is not possible, leads to more pervasive and deeply rooted symptoms.

Symptoms of C-PTSD include all core symptoms of PTSD, and also:

  • Emotional dysregulation: Persistent difficulties in managing emotions, such as intense anger, sadness, shame, or fear.
  • Negative self-concept: Deep-seated feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or persistent shame; a sense of being fundamentally damaged or different from others.
  • Interpersonal difficulties: Chronic problems in relationships, including difficulty trusting others, feeling detached or isolated, or repeated patterns of unhealthy relationships.
  • Dissociation: Episodes of feeling disconnected from one’s thoughts, feelings, body, or surroundings, sometimes as a way to cope with overwhelming stress.

C-PTSD is often associated with early life trauma and can be more challenging to treat due to its impact on identity, emotional development, and relationship patterns. Individuals with C-PTSD may also experience physical symptoms, such as chronic pain or somatic complaints, without a clear medical cause.

Compassionate Counseling for Personal Growth

Treatment and Support

Both PTSD and C-PTSD can be addressed through trauma-informed therapies, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment-Based Therapy, and other evidence-based approaches. Recovery involves restoring a sense of safety, building emotional regulation skills, processing traumatic memories, and developing healthy relationships.

Our clinicians are trained in trauma-focused interventions and work collaboratively with you to support your healing, resilience, and sense of empowerment.
