Recovery is not about resisting desire, but about reclaiming choice and discovering freedom beyond compulsion.

Your Path to Mental Wellbeing Starts Here

What is Sex Addiction?

Sex addiction, also referred to as compulsive sexual behavior or hypersexual disorder, is a condition characterized by persistent, intense, and recurrent sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors that feel out of control and cause significant distress or impairment in daily functioning. Individuals with sex addiction may find themselves engaging in sexual activities despite negative consequences to their relationships, health, work, or personal well-being. This pattern is often accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt, secrecy, and isolation.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Sex Addiction

  • Preoccupation with sexual thoughts, fantasies, or urges that interfere with daily life
  • Repeated unsuccessful attempts to reduce or control sexual behavior
  • Engaging in sexual activities despite risks to self or others (e.g., jeopardizing relationships, employment, or health)
  • Escalating patterns of sexual behavior, such as seeking more frequent or risky activities to achieve the same level of satisfaction
  • Using sexual behavior to cope with stress, loneliness, anxiety, or other uncomfortable emotions
  • Experiencing significant distress, shame, or guilt related to sexual behaviors
  • Neglecting responsibilities, relationships, or personal values due to sexual preoccupation

Sex addiction may involve a range of behaviors, including compulsive use of pornography, anonymous sexual encounters, frequent use of sex workers, excessive masturbation, or engaging in cybersex. The underlying causes often include unresolved trauma, attachment disruptions, emotional neglect, or co-occurring mental health concerns.

How Meadows of Love Family Counseling Services Treats Sex Addiction

We provide specialized, compassionate care for individuals struggling with sex addiction. Our approach is nonjudgmental and trauma-informed, focusing on understanding the unique factors contributing to each person’s experience and supporting sustainable recovery.

Our treatment approach includes:

Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with a thorough evaluation to understand your history, patterns of sexual behavior, emotional triggers, and any co-occurring mental health or relationship concerns.

Psychoeducation: We provide education about the nature of sex addiction, its impact on the brain and relationships, and the cycle of compulsive behavior. This foundation helps reduce shame and empowers informed choices.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy: IFS helps you explore the different “parts” of yourself involved in compulsive sexual behavior, such as the part seeking relief from emotional pain and the part that feels guilt or shame. This process fosters self-understanding, compassion, and emotional regulation.

Attachment-Based Therapy: We address underlying attachment wounds and relational patterns that may drive compulsive sexual behaviors. Healing these wounds supports the development of secure, healthy relationships and emotional intimacy.

Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies: Our clinicians help you identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, recognize triggers, and develop healthy coping skills to manage urges and stress.

Relapse Prevention and Support: We work with you to create individualized strategies for managing triggers, reducing risk of relapse, and maintaining progress over time. This includes building a support network and fostering accountability.

Addressing Co-Occurring Conditions: Sex addiction often coexists with other mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or substance use. Our integrated approach ensures that all aspects of your well-being are addressed.

Safe, Confidential Environment: Healing from sex addiction requires trust and safety. Our therapists provide a nonjudgmental, confidential space where you can address your struggles openly and without fear of shame.

Recovery from sex addiction is a process of self-discovery, healing, and growth. At Meadows of Love, we are committed to supporting you as you regain control, rebuild relationships, and create a life grounded in authenticity and emotional health.
